The subscription model evolved—and so did how software companies price it.

SaaS pricing looked fundamentally different in 2026 than it did five years earlier. Usage-based models proliferated, annual discounts eroded, and seat-based tiers gave way to more granular, consumption-tied pricing structures.

Teams spending six figures annually on software noticed the shift immediately. Vendors stopped competing on simplicity and started competing on flexibility—offering so many pricing permutations that choosing a tier felt like negotiating a phone plan.

The death of the flat monthly fee

By 2026, the $99/month SaaS subscription was nearly extinct for production workloads. Most vendors had abandoned fixed-seat pricing in favor of usage-based or hybrid models.
